DIY Crafts with SVG Patterns

Sewn Doll created

DIY crafts have been a part of my life since I was a child. My mom taught my sister and I everything from crocheting, knitting, sewing, painting figurines and more. I still craft often, but now I tend to sell some of the pieces that I create.

My sister has taken her crafting to a new step by creating a doll company called Wednesday’s Dolls. Like most of us, she started making them as a hobby. People started requesting them so she made a few more. Someone suggested she should do a table at a craft sale to gauge how good they are and she practically sold out. After that, the business just took off. She creates and sews unusual one of kind dolls using unique materials. People love them. She’s always looking for new and unique patterns and has recently turned to using SVG patterns to create some of her dolls.

What is great about SVG patterns is that you can create different sizes without losing the quality of the print. No matter how big you enlarge it or how small you shrink it too there is no loss in quality or fidelity. The patterns also lend to the concept of her dolls always being one of a kind.

The patterns really come in handy when people request specific patterns for their dolls. For example, if someone wants a doll that is made of sunflowers she can use a sunflower svg and create something amazing that her clients really love.

SVG files can be used for many things. They can be used for Embroidery, Paper Cutting, Scrapbooking and of course on fabric to create patterns. Crafters use them to create iron-ons or patterns to print on mugs, books etc… The different uses are endless.

How do you get a hold of these SVG files? DesignBundles.net is a great place to find SVG patterns. They have talented designers creating new patterns on a regular basis. You can stick to a favorite designer and use their patterns exclusively or you can purchase affordable bundles and mix and match different bundles to create your own unique designs. If you look at my sister’s dolls you can see that no two are alike ever. With over 150k products, the design options are endless.

You can also use a Cricut on the patterns. A Cricut is a machine and cuts a pattern precisely so there is no extra material This is great for patches or for iron-ons as I mentioned before.

My sister doesn’t use a Cricut because her designs are about looking free flowing. She uses printable fabric and can create so many different designs and even add names to make the dolls even more personalized. She stopped creating the dolls for a while and is now back at it again so I’m excited to see what she comes up with while using the SVG patterns. She is very creative with a warped sense of humor so I know the dolls will be amazing and of course unique.

Have you used SVG patterns for your crafts? Is it a craft I haven’t mentioned?
