♫ Indie Spotlight: Aztec Releases New Single “East” from their EP ‘Stitches’ (Listen + Interview)

if I ever get back east
to find your old heartbeat
please just hide me away for a while

The great thing about the indie music scene is that there is always a great amount of talent across the globe.
Aztec (Kyle Schepens, Saul Sitar, Patrick Gleeson, Amber Banman) is a 4 member indie band hailing from Canada and it’s very refreshing to hear these talented musicians put together a solid EP that they’ve titled “Stitches”.
The first single “East” is a melodic tune that speaks of heartache and love lost in a very matter of fact and blunt way.
We spoke with lead singer and guitarist Kyle Schepens as part our Indie Spotlight Series where he shared the bands new single “East” and chatted about the bands origin and next steps. Take a listen and enjoy the interview.

What does your name mean?

An Aztec is a member of a Mexican Indian people who created a great empire once
upon a time. We aim to do the same thing in the music industry. That and it’s a great
name that people can remember, mostly that last one.
Describe your music for those who have never heard it.
It’s independent music, loud guitars, loud drums, lots of harmonies, swift and to the
point.
What inspired you to pursue music?
I grew up with my mom who was a part-time musician. She was a singer and performed a lot, still does.
She’d bring my brother and I along to most of her shows since we were very young. I guess growing up surrounded by all that it just felt like the most natural thing for me to do.
The thought of punching in to a 9-5 is not exciting to me, though I do it, it just
doesn’t feel right. Not right now anyway. So while I’m young, driven and have the
support team behind the band and I, why the hell not try to make something here?
Nothing to lose.

Who is your favorite Artist?

All Get Out, if I had to pick my top one, though they’re tied with Manchester Orchestra.
They both have just created so much from nothing and I admire how hard they worked to get to where they are and more so how humble they are about it.

What has been your greatest career accomplishment so far?

I guess it would’ve had to have been getting this EP out. As-well as working with Nathan
on it.
What has been your biggest career challenge?
There are so many constant challenges. From finding the right members that have the
same goals, visions and trust me enough to blindly follow me on this crazy pursuit. To booking tours completely independently and building a solid fan base. I don’t sleep, (I’m) always working on this.
