You may or may not have heard that Tom Petty recently won a lawsuit against rising star Sam Smith.

It was alleged that Smith’s Grammy nominated single ‘Stay with Me’ was more than a bit similar in melody to Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down”.

After hearing and agreeing to the similarities both parties came to an ‘amicable agreement’ so, it wasn’t an actual lawsuit.

The whole Robin Thicke/Pharrell vs. The Marvin Gaye Estate over the similarities between ‘ Blurred Lines’ and Marvin’s ‘Got to Give it Up’ makes these music squabbles that would probably never see the light of day suddenly hot for press.

Well, Tom Petty had something to say about all the hoopla that transpired mostly in the news and social media:

“About the Sam Smith thing. Let me say I have never had any hard feelings toward Sam.  All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen.  Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by.
Sam’s people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement.  The word lawsuit was never even said and was never my intention.  And no more was to be said about it.
How it got out to the press is beyond Sam or myself.  Sam did the right thing and I have thought no more about this.  A musical accident no more no less. In these times we live in this is hardly news. I wish Sam all the best for his ongoing career. Peace and love to all.”

That pretty much clears it all up. Nothing to see here folks. It’s nice to know that it’s not all cut throat and jugular for everyone. Tom is a gentleman for that. I’ll spare you the obvious pun that could be made with his last name.
