Interview with Victoria Ray

What inspired you to become a writer?

I was inspired by my fans and followers on my blog “Raynotbradbury.com”.

I wrote my first story when I was only 6 years old. I thought I was destined for a career in writing. I wanted to spend my days sitting in the dark empty library, half-time reading and half-time writing books, because back then I really believed this is how they do it – Real Writers. But I grew up…

I love stories. We all live our own life stories, and our truths are stranger and more remarkable than fiction. We all want to tell our stories. Why? To inform, to laugh, to question – is it right or wrong, to teach, or simply to have fun. Speaking for myself, of course, I write to entertain and make people smile, but I also trying to explore the “what if…” aspect of life.

Human behavior, our flaws, emotions and achievements – this is what inspires me.

Your favorite author & why?

One of my favorite authors is Dostoevsky. He had a very dramatic life. I’ll mention only a few – his father’s murder; his mock execution and exile; his gambling madness; and his amazing literary debut.

For those who don’t know the story, Dostoevsky’s first novel (he was only 24 years old) was passed before publication to a legendary critic who promptly declared that Dostoevsky was the new Gogol. But his second novel was completely trashed (the book was denounced). And his name became a bad joke.

Why I love him? Because he is not only a writer but a great philosopher as well. His ideas had an immense influence on the literature of the XIX century and his deep penetration into the human soul is remarkable.

My personal advice.
If you like J. D. Salinger then you’d love “The Adolescent” because it is considered to be the precursor to “A Catcher in the Rye”.  If you’re more interested in Dostoevsky’s masterpieces, then my personal recommendation is to read “The Brothers Karamazov”. My favorite book is “The Possessed”I like this work because it’s darkly humorous and very witty.

What books have influenced your life most?

I love O’Henry and his short stories, Lord Byron, Faulkner and Dostoevsky. If you never read O’Henry I’d advice to check him out.

Describe your new book “So Absurd It Must Be True” in 30 words or less.

My book is… freaky and bizarre. Unique and charming. ‘Quixotic’ and relaxing. All your worries and fears will be cast away because this book will bring you ultimate uplifting and happiness.

Why should we read it?

First of all, it is odd, absurd, silly, foolish, crazy and hilarious. Second, I’m introducing very unique literary characters, such as Mr. TightPants, Ms. LustfulTongue, Mr. HardAsIron, Mrs. BoncyTits and so on. Third, there is a hidden lesson in every story you’ll read. And the last – the book is a mix of HUMOR, SCIENCE-FICTION, and fun EROTICA. What not to like?

Have you written any other books?
