One of the fun parts of being a parent is sharing traditions and rituals with your children especially when they are centered around holidays. Stories passed down from generations serve a great part in making sure those traditions continue.
New stories that serve to remind us or introduce us to age old traditions are a fun way to get children excited about upcoming holidays too. Like the just released children’s book “The Legend of the Easter Robin: An Easter Story of Compassion and Faith” by Dandi Daley Mackall which connects an old Pennsylvania Dutch tale of the legend of the robin’s red breast with the story or Jesus and coloring eggs for Easter. That connection is sometimes lost so it’s nice to see it tied together in a way that kids can understand.
Children will connect with young Tressa, who is concerned about a robin she sees laying eggs in a nest just outside of her grandmother’s window. Her grandmother shares the Dutch tale with Tressa along with traditional rituals that lead up to the Easter holiday while instilling the importance of being trusting and patient with God’s love of all his creatures. It’s a great tale that I’d never heard before so, I too learned something new from a children’s book.
“The Legend of Easter Robin” is a wonderful collection for your child’s library. It’s a great read as we prepare for Easter or it can be included in your child’s Easter basket. The very simple and fun craft that Tressa and her grandmother create in the book would make for a easy project that you can use to discuss the story with your child further while doing something fun together.
You can also go out with your child and explore parks in search of robin’s or even any bird that may be creating a nest.
I love books that leave you with so many creative and learning options to explore with your child. It’s what helps make reading an experience that kids look forward to expanding their imaginations.
