Straight Outta Compton takes the number one spot domestically for the second week in a row, beating out Tom Cruise and his Mission Impossible franchise. It came in second internationally to Cruise.
I’m sure this top number a surprise to a lot of people who weren’t even predicting the N.W.A. bio-pic would make past $40M the first week. To date the film has grossed roughly $111.7 million domestically & internationally combined.
The movie continues to be a success despite a bit of controversy. We had Universal offering to pay theaters for extra security which was largely criticized and not even necessary (there has been no violence reported).
Then there was the glaring omission of Dr. Dre’s well documented violence towards women, which he was forced to address in a carefully worded press release issued by him and Apple.
There wasn’t much competition this week in the way of new releases, unless you count Ciaran Foy’s Sinister 2 which came in at number 3. Horror movies with creepy kids always do well.
But, movies with high teens can be hit or miss and the lazy stoner movie “American Ultra” starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart was a clear miss coming in at at #6 domestically.
Fantastic Four (#10) continues to fall and Man From U.N.C.L.E(#5) is struggling too.
There really won’t be anything new worth checking for quite some time. Even the popular Labor Day movie weekend will be pretty quiet with the exception of The Transporter Refueled with Jason Statham.
