I wanted to see The Identical for a while. I’ve actually wanted to see it because of the soundtrack which I had a chance to review a few months back.
I also had the opportunity to see a preview before it was released in theaters but, time got the best of me so I jumped at the chance to review the DVD.
The movie starts with a family giving birth to twins during the The Great Depression. After struggling to find work and feed the children they make the heart wrenching decision to give one of the twins, Ryan, to a preacher (Ray Liotta) and his wife (Ashley Judd) and they vow never to reveal the truth.
Now, I have to admit, the thought of Ray Liotta as a preacher made me chuckle and if you’ve seen Goodfellas then you know why but, he was definitely convincing in this role. I have to give credit to his amazing acting skill on that one.
As an adult Ryan (Blake Rayne) decides he doesn’t want to follow the ‘calling’ that his father has claimed as his path. He gets married and a regular job but eventually that urge to pursue rock and roll takes over.
Along his journey he has a lot of success, some set backs and ultimately questions who he really is and what is his purpose.
The movie is a laid back, family night type of movie that’s easy going and a fun watch. You can kind of see where it’s leading or so I thought. The ending did surprise me. It makes sense but, I saw it going another way.
As I mentioned, Ray Liotta does a great job as the preacher. Also, Seth Green, is pretty good as the drumming childhood friend. Ashley Judd and Blake Rayne give a solid performaces. Oh and one of my favorite actors, Joe Pantoliano is in the movie too. He plays Ryan’s mechanic turned boss.
You’ll really enjoy this movie with your family and the music is pretty great too. I do have to add that it’s not a musical, it’s a movie with a really great soundtrack. Check out the trailer for a sneak peek:
