♫ Indie Spotlight: An Interview w/ Hip Hop Artist Madkap The Writer ‘ + His New Video ‘Back on Track’ (#Watch)

…I go by the name of Madkap The Writer and I will be releasing an EP on November 30th Entitled “Audio Therapy”… A 7 song project that will be followed up by my debut album “Back On Track” set to release Jan 15th 2015…

When I read Madkap The Writer’s intro message to me, it sounded like the start of a rap song so, I kept it as it was and that’s what you just read above.
When it comes to rapping, they say there are two things that make you great 1) your flow 2) your story. Madkap is definitely on the right track as an emcee with both as you’ll see when you listen to his latest track which happens to be titled ‘Back on Track’.
But, there’s also one more that will keep you there and that’s passion for the art. Madkap seems to have that too as he rhymes:
They used to say that I’ll never conquer rap
But I opened up my eyes, I’m all alone in this class
Y’all love how I never blended with the mass
And I do this with my heart
and not for women or the cash
Check out what else Madkap the Writer has to say as joins us for our Indie Spotlight Interview Series. You can also check out the video to  ‘Back on Track’ and let us know what  you think of this up and coming hip hop artist from Syracuse, New York.

Describe your music for those who have never heard it.

If I had to describe my music, I’d call it “Conscious Positive/Negative” depending on the song. I find myself following a song pattern in my head and somehow I end up closing the song with a “conclusion message” no matter how subtle or extreme.
I find that I’m most entertaining with the way I “flow”, my vocabulary and the way I “Dictate” my songs, I don’t feel that the instrumental of the song should overpower me and nor I overpower the instrumental, it’s a complimentary union.
Tell us about your new single ‘Back on Track’
My song “Back On Track” uses a lot of metaphors for basically being/staying focused. Mentioning choosing different paths to end up in your life’s scenarios, like growing up in the ghetto, you don’t HAVE to be a product of your environment, nobody is forcing you to be on the corner or to be subjected to the ghetto conditions, you could choose to do something greater.
What inspired you to pursue music?
Choosing to pursue a music career was honestly not my dream but it turned into a goal as I matured with the art of writing. I was first introduced into writing in the 2nd grade with poetry of all sorts, I love haiku poems because of their Complex Simplicity.
I started writing to industry beats in high school but I was too shy to let people know what I was attempting. Once college came I was surrounded by local rappers and was pushed in to hip hop cyphers in our cafeteria almost weekly and I only shined because it was clear that I was doing it as an art versus a hobby. People told me I should record some music and I guess it went to my head because… well…now we’re here lol.
What has been your greatest career accomplishment so far?
Hmmm….I have to say that my greatest career accomplishment thus far has to be the overall support that I’ve received that I had no idea I’d even get. When I can touch one person and they enjoy my craft, that moves me to keep going.
To hear that a stranger, someone I’ve never met in my life, making it a point to tell me that I’m good is a blessing to me because it reassures me that I’m doing something right, I love rapping about my thoughts and hypothetical ideas that most likely stemmed from a place.

What has been your biggest challenge?

My Biggest challenge right now is life, though it’s my biggest inspiration it has moments that put my writing at a stand still, just because I’m an artist doesn’t mean this is what’s paying the bills right now, get me?
So there is time spent on life to get life right and time is everything… The cliché is “Time is money”, its valuable, meaning that time is life, music, money and etc. so I can say life challenges me but it’s all about proper time management in the bigger picture.
Who is your favorite artist?
I have a few favorite artists so I’ll give a short list
Talib Kweli (He is wise, conscious, lyrical and his flow is so vicious!)
Common (Smooth & Soulful, Hip-Hop Royalty)
Lupe Fiasco (I call him an activist, cares about the black folks and not afraid to call out the reckless ways of the political world)
What’s your career goal for the upcoming year?
My goal for the remainder of the year is to mix and master the Audio Therapy EP so I can get that to the people and editing the song list for my album Back On Track.
I’m really excited to get these projects to the listeners and I can only hope that they enjoy it as much as I did creating the work. This video/visual is a good way to keep the listeners active and hopefully wanting more, also I hope to gain more followers so I can get these 2 projects and future projects out to more people and then I guess we will see where this road takes us but either way I’m Back On Track!
