Don’t you give up on your light
You gotta look deeper than your skin to be right
Living just to break through the night
Be alive, let it shine, and lead the way
Hip hop artist John Blake isn’t rapping about cars, money, the club or many of the popular things that have put hip hop music from South Florida where he hails on the map.
His lyrics are coming from a place of thanks and his positive outlook on life. His style is about inspirational lyrics with a strong, emotional feel.
You get that sense from his upbeat and catchy single “Your Light (let it shine)” which he’s sharing with us today along with a quick Q&A for our Indie Spotlight Series.
John Blake describes the song which features vocalist Elisa Polanco as “nothing like the usual plastic fame-seeking epidemic that currently affects the hip-hop scene.”

Q & A w/Hip Hop Artist John Blake
What does your name mean?
There’s no real meaning behind my artist name. It’s just who I am. I wanted a name similar to my name which is Jonathan Burkett but shorter and similar to just John, which what most people know me by.
Describe your music for those who have never heard it.
I like to put out encouraging music that will open people eyes about life; about all the trials and tribulations that we face in this world. I’ve been through a lot in my life so I speak from the heart with meaning behind every word, Whilw at the same time entertaining.
What inspired you to pursue music?
Music has always touched me and opened my eyes to so much though out my life while facing and going through allot of challenges. Music was what helped to keep me up. Music lifted up spirit when ever I felt down and certain thoughts raced through my head. Without it I don’t know where I’ll be right now.
What has been your greatest career accomplishment so far?
I would have to say my music and my poetry. I don’t have nothing else going on in my life right now.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Biggest challenge I would have to say was when I looked at where I was in life at one point and only saw three options die, jail, or get help.
As a man I didn’t want it but if I wanted to change my life getting help was the best option.
Who is your favorite artist?
2pac because he really spoke to me in his songs “Changes”, “Hail Mary”, “Ghetto Gospel”, “Hell 4 a Hustler”, “Keep Ya Head Up”, “Life Goes On” and so much more.
That man kept it real and spoke from the heart and wasn’t just looking to entertain.
