So, Kanye West marks the 10 year anniversary of his debut album “College Dropout” by taking a moment to rant to the crowd that Charlamagne and Sway need to “Shut The Fuck Up’ .
Meanwhile on flipside, De La Soul marks the 25th anniversary of their classic ‘3 Feet High & Rising” by gifting their fans with a FREE download of their entire catalog.
Another week…another dose of hip hop news so I thought I’d share a couple of things that caught my eyes, ears and raised my eyebrows.
I’m going to just start it off with Kanye. His debut album College Dropout was released 10 years ago on February 10, 2004.
Kanye has taken to giving little “speeches” at his shows during his current Yeezus tour and decided to focus one of the rants on the fact that he’s been doing this hip hop/rap thing for 10 years so when he goes on the radio….ah, just listen it’s short but not sweet and VERY Kanye-esque:
Meanwhile, on the other side of the touring globe, Odd Future was set to open up for Eminem this Saturday in New Zealand but, had their plans cut short when the New Zealand government decided to refuse them entry into the country and essentially and unapologetically banned them.
New Zealand’s deputy mayor, Penny Huls said she was concerned about the lyrical content of their songs and that their past performances have incited violence.
It’s not clear if she meant past performances in New Zealand or just in general but, Huls did add that:
“For all the hundreds of people who’ve contacted me over the last couple of days I’m sure they’ll be relieved.”
Noreaga on the other hand does quite well performing overseas or so he told Sway in an interview on MTV RapFix. He also announced that him and Capone known as C-N-N (Capone-N-Noreaga) have a new EP due out in March called, “War in One Night”.
“We did a whole EP in one night,” N.O.R.E. explained to Sway. “When [Capone] told me he was ready, I wasn’t ready, then I hit him said, ‘You ready?’ He said, ‘Yeah.’ So I did the whole EP, I sent it to him, then he sent me back he whole EP.”
And finally, De La Soul. Three Feet High & Rising turns 25 years old on March 3rd and De La got a jump on the celebration by making their entire catalog available FREE for 24 hours online on Valentine’s Day.
Of course, I downloaded everything and was pretty geeked that they sent some rare photos that will be a part of their upcoming book.
They also have a new project they’re working on called “You’re Welcome“. Can’t wait to hear the details on that.
You can download their catalog here:
I’ll also share a couple of the pictures but, you’ll have to download to see all of them. (Click the photos to enlarge)
And more…..
Billy Ray Cyrus made a hip hop song, Lil Kim is pregnant with rapper Mr. Papers baby, Nicki Minaj is sorry that we misinterpreted her use of the Malcolm X photo, Lil Wayne is almost done with The Carter V, Xbox is making a TV series on Nas’ life, Rif Raff is a country singer now going by the name Jody Highroller, Drake said Macklemore’s apology was wack, Drake also said that the Rolling Stones putting Phillip Seymour Hoffman on the cover instead of him was wack, Jeezy and Rick Ross made up thanks to TI and that’s all I can think of right now.
Peace!
