A Great Flood is coming. Soon it will cover the land.
I sing so you can save yourselves,” said Spotted Frog.
Native American folklore has survived and been handed down through several generations.
“The Otter, the Spotted Frog and the Great Flood” is one of those tales that have stood the test of time.
Author Gerald Hausman retells the story which is handed down from the Creek Indians northern Florida and Georgia and is based on the familiar theme of the great flood.
The story begins with the river otter known as Listener and a buffalo chief known as Honor Himself hearing a frog singing.
Listener wants to take in everything the frog is saying while Honors Himself can’t be bothered and feels it’s a waste of time so you kind of have an idea how things turn out for everyone involved.
The tale has parallel similarities to the story of the great flood that is found in the Bible woven in with the belief of reincarnation and evolution and unfolds through the course of four days.
The illustrations done by Native Ramon Shiloh compliment the story and are reminiscent to traditional Native American art. You can view some of the photos and see a small synopsis of the book in this video from the publisher ‘Wisdom Tales”.
The Otter, the Spotted Frog and the Great Flood is beautiful story of growth and progression that can be read to small children starting at age 4 but probably more suited for the 7 – 10 age range if your child is going to read the book on his or her own.
